The Source of the Problem
What is a dust mite? A dust mite is a microscopic organism that looks like a spider with a fat round body, and it feeds on our dead skin cells. There is an invisible world all around us. It interacts with us every minute of every day. We know that dust mites exist even though we can’t see them. It’s time you were made more aware of their influence on your life.

A dust mite is the microscopic cousin of the tick, but it can cause far more damage than this bloodsucker.
Why are they so bad for us? The dust mite’s waste is an allergen that makes us sick, and people must be made aware of it. Allergies are uncomfortable and even life threatening at times. Asthma is caused by house dust and dust mites come from house dust.
The worst part is that dust mites live in your bed, curtains, carpets, soft toys and furniture. You inhale them every day and that’s what makes you sick. Most people don’t even realize their cough, runny nose and itchy eyes are all caused by dust mite inhalation.
“Out of sight, out of mind” does not apply when dealing with dust mites.
Dust mites are usually only around .3mm big and they live for about 4 months in their favorite location, your mattress. They lay up to 300 eggs in one lifetime and excrete over 200 times their weight in waste. If your mattress has ten thousand mites in it, in four months there will be three hundred thousand of them and two hundred thousand times the waste! The average household mattress has millions of microscopic mites living inside it.
Our body is constantly changing, we lose old skin and grow new skin all the time. Have you ever seen a ray of morning light filled with dust particles? Most of that is human skin, and we can only see ten percent of it. The dust mite thrives on these tiny skin particles, eating and creating harmful waste that stays in our homes.
The best place for a mite to be is in a warm, humid area where they can breed. To a dust mite a mattress is a five star hotel. Plenty of fabric to burrow into, heat and moisture for breeding and a consistent food supply. Millions of them may live in your home right now.
New furniture doesn’t stay mite free for long. Within one month the mite population in your house will spread. Dust mites are so light that they travel in air. When you unsettle a bed, shake out a duvet or stir a curtain, they are distributed all over the place.
Scientists have been studying the effects of dust mite allergies on people for years. Studies have shown that most homes have dangerously high allergen levels from dust mites. This means a greater risk of developing allergies, asthma and number of other conditions.
